Pakistan, India agree to hybrid model for ICC events 2024-27

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pakistan and India have resolved their dispute over the hosting of the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy through a hybrid format. The tournament in Pakistan was scheduled to be held from February 19 to March 9, but was thrown into disarray after India refused to allow a match to be held in Pakistan, citing political and security concerns. The decision came despite statements from all member boards that they were confident in the security arrangements.

Hybrid model
Under the approved hybrid model, India can play in neutral venues and Pakistan can play in venues for ICC events held in India until 2027. This Agreement applies to:

2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan _244444 Women’s ODI World Cup in India
2026 Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka
The host country’s board will request a neutral venue with the approval of the ICC.

The ICC also announced the possibility of a triangular or quadrangular T20I series involving India, Pakistan and other Asian nations in empty stadiums. The offer was a form of compensation for Pakistan for missing out on the opportunity to host India in the Champions Trophy.

The PCB has also been awarded the hosting rights for the 2028 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, which will have a similar stadium layout.

Cricket Australia will also host the ICC’s senior women’s events between 2029 and 2031.

PCB chairman on arrangements
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said preparations are “going well” and said Pakistan is ready to host the tournament. Naqvi, speaking at the PCB board meeting, highlighted the ongoing efforts to upgrade the stadium to international standards and ensure the success of the tournament.

“Our team will work hard to ensure that the stadium meets international standards.” Naqvi said cricket should remain free from politics. PCB board members welcomed Naqvi’s appointment and expressed their concern over hosting an international team in the country.
