The Majestic Rise of the General’s Star to the Marshal Heavens

On Tuesday, the federal cabinet gave the green light to promote Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir to the prestigious rank of Field Marshal. This recognition comes in light of his outstanding military leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, which effectively countered recent Indian aggression and protected our national sovereignty.

General: This significant decision was made during a cabinet meeting led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, marking a rare moment in Pakistan’s military history. The title of Field Marshal, the highest rank in the army, is typically reserved for those who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and bravery in wartime. This elevation follows a strong military response to cross-border tensions that arose earlier this month.

An official statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) shared Field Marshal Asim Munir’s heartfelt gratitude upon receiving this new title. He expressed his thankfulness to Allah Almighty and dedicated this honor to the entire nation, the Pakistan Armed Forces, and especially to the martyrs and veterans from both civilian and military backgrounds.

“This isn’t just an individual accolade; it’s a recognition for the Pakistan Armed Forces and our nation as a whole,” the ISPR statement quoted Field Marshal Asim Munir. He also extended his thanks to the president, the prime minister, and the cabinet for their trust, emphasizing that this “honor is a responsibility entrusted to me by the nation, and millions of Asims are ready to make sacrifices to uphold it.” He expressed his gratitude to the nation as well.
In a related move, the federal cabinet unanimously decided to extend the tenure of Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, whose term was about to end, highlighting the importance of continuity in defense leadership for national security.

After the meeting, an official statement was released, highlighting that the promotion was awarded in recognition of the army chief’s leadership during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos. This operation was initiated in response to an unprovoked attack by Indian forces on the night of May 6 and 7. Thanks to the operation, key strategic and civilian areas were successfully protected from the offensive.

The cabinet acknowledged that Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity were under threat, praising the Armed Forces of Pakistan for their coordinated and effective defense. General Asim Munir was noted for his pivotal role in directing the response.
The cabinet also extended congratulations to the entire nation for a significant victory in what they termed the ‘Battle for Truth,’ referring to Marka-e-Haq – the military’s successful defense against India’s sudden and unprovoked assault during the first week of May.

According to the cabinet’s statements, Indian forces had launched an unjustified and aggressive campaign, targeting civilian areas and attempting to breach Pakistan’s territorial integrity.
General Munir, recognized for his bravery, strategic insight, and cohesive command, was credited with bringing the armed forces together under a unified military strategy that effectively thwarted the enemy’s plans.

The cabinet declared that his “unmatched leadership” led to a historic national achievement, warranting the rare promotion to Field Marshal, a title that has only been awarded once before in Pakistan’s history. Prime Minister Shehbaz personally informed President Asif Zardari about this decision, ensuring his support for the move.
Additionally, the cabinet decided that officers and personnel of the Pakistan Armed Forces, along with veterans, martyrs, and citizens from various sectors, would receive high-level state honors in recognition of their invaluable contributions during Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.

The decision to promote Gen Asim to the rank of Field Marshal was celebrated by people from all walks of life. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah warmly welcomed the news, extending his heartfelt congratulations to COAS Gen Asim Munir on this prestigious honor.
Earlier, Shehbaz announced that May 10 would be observed each year as Youm-e-Ma’raka-e-Haq (Day of the Battle for Truth), commemorating the country’s significant success in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos against India. He also revealed substantial financial compensation packages for both civilians and military personnel affected during the Pakistan-India conflict.

Operation Bunyanum Marsoos was launched by Pakistan on May 10, 2025, in response to unprovoked Indian aggression, which included missile strikes on Pakistani airbases and civilian areas. The operation, named after a Quranic term meaning “solid structure,” aimed to neutralize key Indian military installations and showcase Pakistan’s military resolve.

In retaliation to the Indian attacks, the Armed Forces of Pakistan targeted India’s BrahMos missile storage facility in Beas, as well as airbases in Udhampur and Pathankot, and a military intelligence training facility in Rajouri. Pakistan’s armed forces also successfully shot down at least five Indian fighter jets, including three Rafale aircraft. The downing of these jets, especially the Rafales, was a significant event, marking the first confirmed combat loss of the French-made aircraft.

Pakistan’s strong response quickly attracted international attention, with global powers urging both nations to de-escalate tensions and avoid further military confrontations. Eventually, following US President Donald Trump’s intervention, both sides agreed to a ceasefire, which remains in effect. President Trump also encouraged both parties to engage in talks to resolve their longstanding issues, including the Kashmir dispute.
