Article 144 enacted to prevent firing and fireworks in Karachi celebrations

The Commissioner of Karachi has announced the imposition of Article 144 for 48 hours from December 31, 2024 following security concerns related to the New Year celebrations.

In Karachi, celebrations are often associated with shooting and fireworks, which have previously caused injuries. The commissioner issued this ban to prevent such incidents, citing the risks associated with large gatherings and risky activities.

Article 144 of the Criminal Code gives regional governments the power to prohibit the gathering of four or more people within a certain period.

This new report dated December 24, 2024 is based on intelligence reports indicating that several youths were heading to Seaview by car and motorcycle to participate in the festivities, causing traffic disruption and inconvenience to residents.

The Deputy Inspector General of Police, South, has requested a ban to prevent the display of weapons, aerial firing and fireworks in order to protect the lives of civilians.

The Commissioner highlighted the possibility of tragic incidents due to such reckless behaviour and a complete ban on possession of weapons, aerial firing and fireworks is in force from 31 December 2024 to 1 January 2025.
