Nacta will operate a new threat center and intelligence coordination

ISLAMABAD: The establishment of an intelligence coordination and threat assessment center under the National Counter Terrorism Authority (Nacta) was formally approved by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Monday.

At the fifth meeting of the Nacta board of governors, the sanction was given that would essentially entail the rebirth of the Joint Intelligence Directorate (JID), which was established in 2016 under previous interior minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan.

The meeting’s main focus was on important choices that would improve Pakistan’s counterterrorism infrastructure. Khalid Chauhan, National Coordinator for Nacta, provided a thorough update on the authority’s operations and future goals.

The approval of the National Intelligence Fusion and Threat Assessment Centre (Niftac) was one of the meeting’s most important outcomes.

The new center will function as a specialized hub for threat analysis and intelligence coordination. It was created following extensive consultations with security stakeholders.

Similar centers will complement Niftac’s activities in the provinces.

Mr. Naqvi emphasized that one of the most important steps in accomplishing Nacta’s strategic goals was the establishment of Niftac. He stated that in order to support regional intelligence efforts, comparable centers known as “Piftacs” will be established in the province capitals.

It is anticipated that the creation of Niftac will guarantee the efficient execution of the National Action Plan (NAP) and tackle new security issues.

Home Secretaries from every province, Inspector Generals of Police from Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, Senators Manzoor Ahmed and Ponjo Mal Bheel, the Interior Secretary, and the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad also attended the meeting.

Tallal Chaudhry emphasized that Niftac would strengthen Nacta’s ability to counter terrorism by increasing its operational capability.

The board of governors unanimously accepted every suggestion made by Mr. Chauhan. The choices made have the potential to improve counterterrorism strategy and strengthen the internal security apparatus.

Ahsan for bringing back the 2018 policy

Separately, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal called for the revival of the National Internal Security Policy of 2018 in order to eradicate terrorism and extremism from the nation while chairing the second steering committee meeting on the socio-political domain. This was in response to the Central Apex Committee’s directives regarding the revised National Action Plan 2021.

Minister Ahsan Iqbal

He noted that the National Internal Security Policy (NISP 2018–23) was created in 2017–18, during the previous PML–N administration, with input from all relevant parties and the consent of civil-military leadership.

By giving non-kinetic measures priority, this policy’s main goal was to build on Operation Zarb-i-Azab’s success. In order to strengthen national peace, NISP offered a thorough framework that included initiatives in the administrative, social, economic, political, and information spheres,” he continued.

Unfortunately, the NISP (2018) was not implemented by the previous government, which resulted in the reversal of the progress made against extremism and terrorism.

As a result, he continued, “the policy document should continue to guide the government and resonates with the situation as much today as it did in 2018.”

The minister also demanded that schools be more vigilant in order to prevent pupils from being influenced by teachers who have extreme views.

He promoted the implementation of a positive curriculum aimed at encouraging pupils to be moderate and to support national unity.
