89% of Parents Heavily Depend on Gadgets to Entertain Kids While Traveling, Reveals Survey

A recent survey has revealed that 89% of parents use gadgets to entertain kids while traveling or to gain some free time for themselves. While digital devices provide convenience, concerns arise regarding children’s online safety.

According to a Thursday press release from global cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky, more than half (53%) of children in the Middle East, Turkiye, and Africa (META) region receive their first personal device—a smartphone or tablet—between ages three to seven.

However, 22% of parents admitted they have not discussed internet safety rules with their children. This means that some kids, who are often left unsupervised with their gadgets, may not be aware of how to stay safe online.

The survey also highlighted that 78% of children confessed they couldn’t live without their gadgets, proving how deeply integrated technology has become in their daily lives. Smartphones, tablets, and gaming consoles top the list of the most desirable devices among children, reinforcing the need for better online safety measures.

The Growing Dependence on Digital Gadgets

With 89% of parents using gadgets to entertain kids while traveling, experts warn that digital safety cannot be overlooked. While gadgets help keep children occupied, they also increase screen time exposure and potential online risks.

As children receive their first personal devices between the ages of three to seven, they become early adopters of digital technology. Many parents rely on gadgets as a distraction tool, especially during long trips, restaurant visits, or when they need some free time. However, without proper guidance, children may access inappropriate content, fall victim to online scams, or engage in excessive screen time habits.

Seifallah Jedidi, head of consumer channels in the META region at Kaspersky, emphasized the need for active parental involvement in children’s digital lives.

“Most parents give their children gadgets to entertain them, free up their own time, or calm them down. However, children shouldn’t use digital devices without supervision. Parents should actively monitor their child’s online activities,” he said.

How Parents Can Ensure Online Safety for Kids

With 89% of parents using gadgets to entertain kids while traveling, ensuring a safe and balanced digital experience is crucial. Experts recommend several steps parents can take to minimize online risks.

1. Set Screen Time Limits

Regulating the time children spend on devices is essential. Too much screen time can lead to reduced physical activity, sleep disturbances, and poor social interactions. Parents can use built-in device settings or third-party parental control apps to manage daily usage.

2. Have Open Conversations About Online Safety

Many parents assume their children understand internet safety rules, but the survey shows that 22% of parents haven’t discussed online risks. Talking to kids about cyber threats like stranger danger, phishing scams, and privacy protection can empower them to navigate the online world responsibly.

3. Apply Parental Controls and Security Solutions

Jedidi reassured parents that using parental controls is not about distrusting their child but about taking a sensible precaution.

Parental control tools allow parents to:

  • Monitor which websites their children visit.
  • Control which games they play.
  • Block file downloads and access to inappropriate content.
  • Prevent sharing of confidential information.

With cybercriminals targeting children’s personal data, having security software installed on devices is a must.

The Risks of Unsupervised Gadget Usage

While 89% of parents use gadgets to entertain kids while traveling, it’s important to recognize the risks associated with unsupervised screen time. Some of the major concerns include:

1. Exposure to Inappropriate Content

Children may accidentally come across violent, explicit, or harmful content while browsing the internet. Without proper restrictions, they can also access unsafe websites and social media platforms.

 2. Cyberbullying and Online Predators

Social media and gaming platforms expose kids to online strangers, increasing the risk of cyberbullying and predatory behavior. Without proper parental supervision, kids may unknowingly interact with harmful individuals.

3. Online Scams and Malware Threats

Children may click on malicious ads, download viruses, or fall for scams while using devices. Hackers often target young users to steal personal information or trick them into making in-app purchases.

4. Addiction and Social Isolation

The survey revealed that 78% of children said they couldn’t live without their gadgets. Excessive screen time can lead

to technology addiction, making it difficult for children to engage in outdoor activities, face-to-face interactions, and creative play.

The Role of Security Solutions in Protecting Kids Online

Security solutions like those provided by Kaspersky help parents safeguard their children’s digital lives. By using advanced cybersecurity measures, parents can protect:

🔹 Financial data and confidential information from cybercriminals.
🔹 Children from online risks, such as cyberbullying and inappropriate content.
🔹 Devices from malware and hacking attempts.

Kaspersky’s parental control features allow parents to:

âś” Restrict access to certain websites.
âś” Block specific apps and limit screen time.
âś” Monitor online activity for suspicious behavior.
âś” Receive alerts if children visit potentially dangerous sites.

With 89% of parents using gadgets to entertain kids while traveling, the need for better digital safety practices is more important than ever. By applying parental controls, having open conversations, and monitoring device usage, parents can create a safer online environment for their children.

Final Thoughts: How Parents Can Balance Entertainment and Safety

Technology has become an essential part of modern parenting, with 89% of parents relying on gadgets to entertain kids while traveling. While digital devices offer convenience, parents must also ensure their children’s safety online.

Here’s how parents can strike the right balance:

âś… Encourage a mix of screen time and physical activities.
âś… Have regular discussions about online safety and digital etiquette.
âś… Use parental controls to prevent exposure to online threats.

âś… Monitor app usage and set screen time rules.
âś… Educate children about privacy, cyberbullying, and responsible gadget use.

With proper supervision, guidance, and security measures, parents can allow their children to enjoy digital devices without compromising their safety.
